Disability Specific Technology Support
Assistive technology helps students’ access information and increases their ability to sustain effort in the learning process. When students know they can access information and have choice in their own means of expression, their ability to sustain effort will increase because they are engaged. Engagement in learning is critical, for if we can tap into students’ interests, challenges and motivations we can connect them to the learning goals, the learning tasks and learning materials. Technology focuses on students’ strengths, not weaknesses, and shifts thinking from ‘disability’ to ‘ability’ by providing individualized means of acquiring knowledge and information. Students who have disabilities will benefit from digital technology, but all learners who have ever struggled with accessibility, comprehension or motivation to learn will benefit too. Technology allows students to learn beyond what classrooms and textbooks provide and nurtures individual potential and sparks passion.
